What Paraty costs depends a lot on your style: you can backpack on little or stay in boutique pousadas and dine out every night. Rather than fixed numbers — which shift with the season and exchange rate — think in categories, and where it's worth tightening or splurging.
The four big expenses
- Lodging — usually the biggest cost; it swings widely between low and high season.
- Tours — the boat trip is the priciest item of the day; the schooner splits the cost and is good value.
- Food — from a set lunch to dinner in the center, there's an option for every budget.
- Transport — getting to Paraty (bus/transfer/car) plus trips out to Trindade and the mountains.
Where to really save
The biggest savings come from season (traveling outside holidays and summer drops lodging), tour type (schooner instead of private speedboat), and eating where locals eat, a few blocks off the main street. Town beaches and trails are free.
Where it's worth spending more
If you splurge on one thing, make it a well-run boat trip — it's the essence of Paraty. A private speedboat for a day among the islands, or a discover-scuba dive, often becomes the trip's best memory. Book ahead to secure a spot and, often, a better price.
