Paraty in Winter (July & August): Is It Worth It?
Dry, sunny days, a cooler sea and the year's best diving visibility. What to expect from Paraty in the driest season.
In one of Brazil's rainiest regions, winter (July and August) is the driest season — and so an underrated window to visit Paraty. Frequently sunny days, less rain and the clearest water of the year. The trade-off: the sea cools and nights call for a layer.
Weather and sea
Expect mild, dry days with a good chance of sun. The water gets cooler for swimming, but visibility improves a lot — it's the best season for diving and snorkeling. Bring a light layer for the evenings and the breeze on the way back from boat trips.
Crowds and prices
July brings school holidays and FLIP (the literary festival, usually this month), so the town fills up in spells. August tends to be calmer — except on the Cachaça Festival weekend. Outside those peaks, you can find better prices than in summer.
What to do
With dry weather, it's the ideal season for waterfalls and trails, which are less sweaty, and for diving, thanks to the visibility. The historic center, of course, works year-round. If a cooler sea doesn't put you off, winter delivers Paraty at its best weather.
