New Year & Carnival in Paraty: What to Expect from the Summer Festivities
The two busiest moments of the year. What New Year and bloco Carnival are like in Paraty — and how to plan to enjoy them without stress.
New Year and Carnival are the two peaks of Paraty's calendar — maximum energy, maximum crowds and maximum prices. They can be unforgettable if you like a buzz, or a shock if you expected quiet. Here's what to expect.
New Year's Eve
New Year in Paraty is more charming than flashy: a feast, music and fireworks seen from the waterfront and the pier, with the historic center full of people dressed in white. It's peak summer — book lodging many months ahead and expect multi-night minimum stays.
Carnival
Paraty's Carnival is a street affair, built on blocos — most famously the traditional Bloco da Lama, where revelers cover themselves in mangrove mud. The cobblestone streets become a dance floor to the sound of marchinhas. It's lively and welcoming, but the town gets packed; not the best time if you want calm.
How to plan
- Book lodging many months ahead — it sells out early.
- Expect high prices and multi-night minimum stays.
- Boat tours fill up; reserve before you arrive.
- If you want calm, avoid these dates and aim for April–June or September–November.
