Paraty or Búzios? How to Choose Between Two Rio Classics
Colonial charm and nature versus buzzy beaches and nightlife. The real differences between Paraty and Búzios — and which suits your trip.
Paraty and Búzios are two of the most sought-after destinations from Rio — but they have opposite personalities. Choosing between them is really about choosing the kind of trip you want.
The vibe of each
Paraty is colonial charm, nature and a slow pace: cobblestone streets, Atlantic forest and an island-filled bay. Búzios is more sophisticated and buzzy — a peninsula of varied beaches, with the Rua das Pedras packed with bars, restaurants and nightlife.
Beaches
Búzios has more than twenty quite different beaches on a compact peninsula, easy to reach by car or buggy. Paraty spreads its beaches across a huge bay — the prettiest ones require a boat tour, which makes the journey part of the experience.
Distance, prices and nightlife
Both sit roughly 2 to 4 hours from Rio, in opposite directions (Búzios to the east, Paraty to the west). Búzios tends to be pricier and has lively nightlife; Paraty is calmer and generally more affordable, with nights of music and food rather than clubbing.
So which should you choose?
Choose Búzios if you want varied beaches by foot/car, sun and buzz. Choose Paraty if you're after nature, history and calm — and like the idea of reaching the best beaches by boat. With more time, you can even combine both on a longer Rio-state trip.
