Paraty's Waterfalls & Cachaça Route: The Mountain Jeep Circuit
Tobogã, Poço do Tarzan and artisanal distilleries in the Serra da Bocaina. A day off the water and into the rainforest.
Once you've cruised the bay, turn your back on the sea and climb the mountains. The Paraty–Cunha road crosses the Atlantic forest and opens onto a string of waterfalls and distilleries — the perfect outing for a hot day, and the side of Paraty many people miss.
Cachoeira do Tobogã
The star of the circuit is Tobogã: a slab of smooth rock the water slides over, which the bravest ride standing up like a natural waterslide. Just above is the Poço do Tarzan, with vines to swing from into the pool. It's fun, social and very photogenic.
The cachaça route
Paraty gave its name to cachaça — for a long time "parati" was a byword for the spirit across Brazil. The artisanal distilleries in the hills still produce award-winning cachaça and open their doors for tastings. A stop at a distillery rounds off the jeep circuit perfectly.
It's a day that blends nature, waterfall swims and local culture — and balances out an itinerary that would otherwise be all beach and boat.
