Wildlife in Paraty: What You Might See in the Atlantic Forest
Toucans, monkeys, turtles and dolphins. The nature around Paraty is one of the last great stretches of Atlantic forest — and it's full of life.
Paraty is surrounded by one of Brazil's largest continuous remnants of Atlantic forest, protected by parks like the Serra da Bocaina. It's one of the planet's richest and most threatened biomes — and, with a little attention, you'll see some of that life on your own outings.
In the forest and on the trails
On the trails and the jeep circuit, watch for toucans, colorful tanagers and small monkeys leaping through the trees. At dawn and dusk, the chorus of birds and insects is part of the show. Howler monkeys can be heard in the distance in the most preserved areas.
At sea
In the bay, it's not rare to spot dolphins riding alongside the boats, sea turtles surfacing, and a profusion of fish on the rock walls while snorkeling. At certain times, seabirds dive into shoals — a sign of a living ecosystem.
Watching responsibly
- Never feed wild animals — it changes their behavior and health.
- Keep your distance from turtles and dolphins; watch without chasing.
- Don't collect shells, coral or plants.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen when swimming near the rock walls.
