Paraty with Kids: A Family Travel Guide
Calm water, waterslide waterfalls and a car-free center. Why Paraty works so well with kids — and what to do at every age.
Paraty is a surprisingly easy destination with kids: the bay is sheltered and shallow, the historic center is car-free, and most outings move at a gentle pace. With a few precautions, it's a family trip that pleases everyone from babies to teens.
The best family outings
- Schooner across the bay — roomy deck, calm-water stops and a bar/restaurant on board.
- Cachoeira do Tobogã — the natural slide is a hit with kids (with supervision).
- Historic center — car-free, so children roam the cobblestones freely.
- Still-water beaches, like Saco da Velha, for the little ones.
Safety and comfort
Check that child-size life vests are available before boarding, and bring sunscreen, hats and plenty of water. At the waterfalls, the rocks are slippery — water shoes help. For babies, note that the cobblestones make strollers hard going; a carrier is more practical.
When to go with kids
Outside holidays, tours leave with smaller groups and more room for a family. If you can, avoid the hottest peak-summer days with small children. Mornings tend to be calmer at sea — ideal for first swims.
