What to Do in Paraty When It Rains: A Wet Day Isn't a Lost Day

December 8, 2025 5 min

Paraty is one of Brazil's rainiest regions — and a wet day still delivers. Waterfalls, cachaça, museums and food for rainy days.

The mountains around Paraty trap the sea's moisture, so it rains a lot — in any season. The good news: some of the town's best things to do don't depend on sun. A cloudy day can even be the best time for them.

Waterfalls — better in the rain

You're going to get wet anyway, so rain barely affects the waterfalls — and they run fuller and more impressive. The jeep circuit through the hills works well on cloudy days (just avoid going right after heavy storms, when the current rises).

Cachaça, museums and studios

A rainy day is perfect for visiting a distillery and tasting cachaças under cover, exploring the center's small museums and churches, or stepping into the studios of artists and artisans scattered through the colonial quarter.

Eat slowly

And of course, rain is the perfect excuse for a long meal. Book a leisurely lunch at a caiçara restaurant, with moqueca and a caipirinha — and let time pass while the rain falls outside.
