Where to Stay in Paraty: A Guide to the Neighborhoods & Pousadas

October 1, 2025 6 min

Historic center, seafront or forest's edge? Each part of Paraty has a different mood. Here's which one suits your trip.

Paraty is compact, but where you sleep changes the tone of the trip. Pousadas range from the colonial center to retreats in the forest and on the water's edge — and each area has its strengths. Here's how to choose.

The historic center

Staying inside the center puts you on foot from everything: restaurants, bars, shops and the tour departure points. The pousadas occupy charming colonial mansions, though weekend nightlife reaches the rooms — great if you want to be in the middle of the action.

The seafront and Praia do Pontal

Just north of the center, across the river, are pousadas with bay views and easy access to Praia do Pontal. It's a quieter option, still a few minutes' walk from the center — a good balance of calm and convenience.

Forest's edge

For silence and nature, there are pousadas on the outskirts, backed against the Atlantic forest, some with river pools and their own trails. You trade the walk to restaurants for birdsong at dawn — ideal for couples and for resting after the day tours.

Whatever the area, book early in high season (summer and holidays). Line up your stay alongside the tours now to lock in the dates you want.
